On The Friday Random Ten VI
Sure I missed last week's Friday Random Ten but I was...uhm...well, I was posting Ironmix for goodness sake! Anyway, I'll pick it up this week (again on a Saturday) in hopes that any of my newly acquired Calexico live tracks or Khonnor EPs will pop up...

Da Rules: "So! You know what day it is! Time to put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. You must resist the temptation to click past the bad or embarrassing songs."

  1. "Choice" by Drew Neumann - From a super secret soundtrack to the animated adventures of Aeon Flux, this track is pure instrumental weirdness.
  2. "(I Could Never) Give You Up" by Roxette - I have a gushy spot in my heart for Look Sharp!. The vocals are so crisp and gorgeous. And and and this one has a classical guitar solo!
  3. "Hash Pipe" by Weezer - F this noise. I hated this song when I first heard it and had to overcome the hate to buy Weezer (Green). Love the album, still hate the song.
  4. "Set Two" by Seedy - From a long, mix compilation called One Minute Massacre, this doesn't make much sense on its own.
  5. "Lover Lover Lover" by Ian McCulloch - I've said it before and I'll say it again: Leonard Cohen songs are always better when performed by people other than Leonard Cohen.
  6. "Suzi Q" by Ammonia - Forgettable guitar rock.
  7. "Just" by Radiohead - I know I'm a heathen for dismissing the rest of Radiohead's catalog but The Bends is a coherent, rock masterpiece and everything else is just a series of intellectual excercises that I can't enjoy. This song, by the way, has the best video ever.
  8. "Comfort" by Athenauem - I never listened to the lyrics on this one before and now I wish I hadn't. This is some cheese.
  9. "I Like Chinese" by Monty Python - So fantastically inappropriate and yet it makes me laugh every time, particularly the tap dancing bit.
  10. "Science Fiction" by Jewel Thieves - One of two albums I bought from MP3.com back in their heyday. With wavering chorus vocals and a dragging temp, this track is one step away from greatness.

Majorly Enjoyed: "Lover Lover Lover" by Ian McCulloch from Mysterio. Cohen's top-notch songwriting about overused sentiment paired with Ian's dreamy vocals are irresistable to me.

Minorly Enjoyed: Did I not say it loud enough before? Fuck "Hash Pipe."

Others: Who shall I turn to but Marissa for the most comprehensive collection of links possible.

In closing, now I'm listening to Buster Poindexter. I have to remind myself it's okay to skip songs after doing the FR10.

oh my god! the bends is one of my all-time favorite albums. within the whole radiohead catalog, i think it's the best, even though people often scoff and laugh at me. yes, ok computer is good, but the bends makes me want to cry every time i listen to it. which is a lot. well, maybe i don't want to cry EVERY TIME.

i hate hash pipe too. lately i've had to let my love of weezer go. hash pipe was a small beginning, and now beverly hills and the new album has totally cemented it. so sad...rivers what happened?

i know this guy whose favorite band of *ALL TIME* is roxette. that makes me smile.

I think what does it for me on The Bends is that it's all weird and Radioheady but it's also solidly grounded in alternative rock 'n roll. The other albums veer too much from the path for me to get into them. I need something that's a good mix of experiment and classic construction to rock my world and The Bends is it.

Also, amen to the new Weezer album being terrible. It's like Rivers cribbed the lyrics from a junior high poetry class. In the past, I've hated the first song I heard from each album but then grown to like the album ("Tired of Sex" and "Hash Pipe" being the big examples) but, this time, I hated the first song--"Beverly Hills"--and realized it's the best song on the album.

Weezer used to be on the very short list of bands whose albums I would buy unheard. Not anymore, amigos.

Hey, as we seem to be in sync on our music tastes, you should definitely grab a copy of my last mix.
