I so want to be part of the crowd but my Fridays end up being so busy. Still, I will continue with the Friday Random Ten.
Da Rules: "So! You know what day it is! Time to put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. You must resist the temptation to click past the bad or embarrassing songs."
- "Slide" by Moke - I always think of Moke as the cross-over kings combining funk, hard rock, rap, hip hop, and pop but no one seems to love their mongrel music quite as much as me. Too bad because this song will kick your ass up around your shoulders. (Then you'll have to unzip your fly to blow your nose.)
- "Another Day" by Admiral Twin - I'm rediscovering these guys and thinking I'll have to see if they have any other albums I can rescue from the dollar bin. Sharply-produced power pop always wins in my house.
- "All I Want" by Toad the Wet Sprocket - Probably the first Toad song I ever heard. I'd bet this one started it all. They're not on my top 10 at Last.FM for nothing.
- "New York City" by They Might Be Giants - Let's have a big collective, "awwww" shall we?
- "Yellow, Green, Red" by Siddal - Why don't I remember buying this? Where have I been? This song is awesome! It's essentially a music box playing a children's lullaby backed with a kind of "Halcyon + On + On" chill out electronica. It's so good that I'll ignore the voice screaming "Yellow!" throughout.
- "Unhappy" by Lincoln - I'm not sure why this guy sings like a kindergartner but the lyrics are pleasing.
- "CityZen" by Lucas - Yes, "Lucas with the Lid Off" Lucas and this song is pretty dope if not the best on the album.
- "Resist" by Kevin Salem - A mopey one from a guy I generally like when he's rockin' it. I wish the player had hit another tune on this album like "Falter" or "Shot Down."
- "Shake Up" by The Dharmas - They sound like such happy people (and almost exactly like Poi Dog Pondering).
- "Down" by 311 - Hells, yeah! Give it up for 1995! My housemate in California used to pump 311 all the time and I still get a major hit of nostalgia anytime I hear this. I can't sing along with it but there's a bit where he sings "sumtin sumtin sumtin chameleon sumtin sumtin sumtin;" I know that bit.
Majorly Enjoyed: Even though I rediscovered that excellent tune by Siddal, I was digging Moke the most. Carnival is my favorite of their two albums and "Slide" has all the elements that make me love them. I'm particularly fond of the use of dynamics. The song goes from a whisper to a scream and back again.
Minorly Enjoyed: From many, many, many good tracks, I was pretty bored with the Kevin Salem selection from Soma City. Sorry, Kev, you were mixed in with so many other winners.
Others: Who has the links? Marissa has the links! (At her new home no less.)
In closing, "sumtin sumtin sumtin sumtin down, down."Located: ym emoh Feeling: blank Listening: "Don't Tell Me" by The Merrymakers
