On The Friday Random Ten IX
You know you have a good thing when it carries on without the leader. Snooble may be down but we'll always have the Friday Random Ten...and Paris.

Da Rules: You know what day it is! Time to put your digital music player on shuffle, play it, Sam, and list the first ten songs that show up. You must resist the temptation to click past the bad or embarrassing songs.

  1. "Matter" by The Josh Joplin Band - This song sounds like every other that shows up on an Aware compilation. This is not to say I don't like those songs, just that they sound veeery similar.
  2. "Clarity" by Jimmy Eat World - Forgive me for liking Bleed American better. These earlier recordings are definitely more raw and energetic but the songwriting is more consistent later.
  3. "Our Love" by Rhett Miller - Super awesome. I had never heard of this guy's previous band, the Old 97's, but I quickly became a fan when I heard this song at KSER.
  4. "Miette" by Angelo Badalamenti - From the City of Lost Children soundtrack. It's score music so I'm definitely more pumped up seeing the movie than I am listening to the CD.
  5. "Instant Karma!" by Toad the Wet Sprocket - Leave it to one of my favorite bands to elevate my opinion of a song by one of my least favorite Beatles. Actually, this was already my favorite Lennon tune (Eff "Imagine") and now I'm going to have to track down the covers by Nelly Furtado and The Mission UK.
  6. "Nocturne" by Red Delicious - Their siren song won me over back in the good old days of MP3.com and I bought their demo. I still gravitate to these ethereal songs when I'm in the mood...once a year or so. (I prefer Olive.)
  7. "Been Caught Stealing (12" remix version)" by Jane's Addition - This song makes me jump around. Can't stop the hop. Why haven't any rappers sampled this yet?
  8. "Vineyard" by Jackopierce - Adult alternative pop music that I'm moderately embarrassed about owning.
  9. "#41" by Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Those who know me won't be shocked when I say that I like the full band version of this more. Jake would appreciate it if I publicly recognize that Tim Reynolds is a good guitarist when playing with a group. However, when they take the reins off the guy, he is a massive wanker. Good tune though.
  10. "My Dark Star" by Suede (The London Suede) - These guys are totally hit or miss with me. "Beautiful Ones"? Hit. "My Dark Star"? Miss.
Majorly Enjoyed: And coming around the outside, it's "Been Caught Stealing" with half a length lead on "Our Love." "Our Love" is moving up though. "Been Caught Stealing" appears to be weighed down by the remix. And they're neck and neck to the line. It's "Our Love" by Rhett Miller by a nose! Oh, man, he's got to be happy with The Instigator today!

Minorly Enjoyed: "Vineyard" by Jackopierce is easily the loser. It comes from their final album, Finest Hour, which wasn't. This is another example of a two-man band increasing their ranks and failing to impress me with the result. I far prefer their earlier, stripped-down work on Bringing on the Weather. I'm no good at being noble but it doesn't take much to see that this song don't amount to a hill of beans.

Others: normally, I'd say to point your browser to Marissa's domain to round up the usual suspects. It appears though, that she's not up yet, so I'll handle it: Ben, Brian, Ellen, Howard, Sherri, Ashley...

Only one post today. Yes, I've dropped [info]thefridayfive from my schedule. The questions were boring me and I'm back in the habit of writing anyway, so mission accomplished! Since I mentioned it, I'd like to thank President Bush for utterly ruining that phrase. If, before he leaves office, he could fuck up in front of a few more banners with useful phrases, that would be great.

In closing, you know how you sound, Mr. Bush? Like a man who's trying to convince himself of something he doesn't believe in his heart.
