On The Friday Random Ten XII
Work, work, work, Friday Random Ten, work.

Da Rules: "So! You know what day it is! Time to put your digital music player on shuffle, click play, and list the first ten songs that show up. You must resist the temptation to click past the bad or embarrassing songs."

  1. "Bomb in Reverse" by John Vanderslice - A minimal, airy tune from an album I like to put on when I'm feeling lazy.
  2. "Under the Boardwalk" by Rockapella - This is from a soundtrack to a Spike Lee movie called Do It A Capella that I've never seen. I just like the music.
  3. "Tell It to the Sky" by Tracy Bonham - I love the yearning in her voice both when she's whispery and when she's caterwauling.
  4. "She Came On" by Super Deluxe - The only Super Deluxe song in my collection and it's in there twice, both times from mixdiscs made by others. Are you guys trying to tell me something?
  5. "Dolly" by The Refreshments - Not my favorite Refreshments song but any morning that includes these guys is a good one. Cute wordplay from Roger Clyne: "The next time you're around, stay away."
  6. "Dnalworromot" by The Nields - An audience sings a 30-second song about Tomorrowland. Funny to have it break up the day's chart but not really a song.
  7. "The Slow Descent into Alcoholism" by The New Pornographers - These guys could make a pop song about The Holocaust and it would sound happy.
  8. "Same Changes" by Sam Phillips - And then comes my favorite female artist ever! There aren't enough superlatives in my vocabulary.
  9. "Automatic Flowers" by Our Lady Peace - I am unashamed of my love for early Our Lady Peace. I am, however, sorry that their last record Gravity stunk so bad. This song is a good example of the early years when they rocked.
  10. "Mess Around" by Redd Kross - Bring me more power pop with my breakfast please!
Minorly Enjoyed: They're all good, see? But there are better tracks on Do It A Capella than "Under the Boardwalk", particularly the Ladysmith Black Mombazo tracks.

Majorly Enjoyed: "Dolly" by the Refreshments hit the spot, I'll tell you. The Bottle and Fresh Horses is a fine sophomore release. Makes me a little sad that there was never a junior year for these fellows.

Others: Marissa is a linking machine and saves me from the work.

In closing, now I have to go stock up my fridge.

I'm surprised you aren't more into Super Deluxe. They seem like your kind of band.

I'll probably have to give them a serious listen. I wasn't as loopy for power pop in the mid-nineties. I was still listening to grunge with the rest of herd. Now that I've gained a taste for super sugar sounds, I'll borrow a few Super Deluxe CDs from the library.

If the library doesn't have Super Deluxe we'll hook you up.

Doing this gives you the weirdest shit. Crazy songs I've never listened to, or didn't know were on my computer. Lately I purged about 3 gigs of music, but there is still plenty of stuff left and it's all weird.

1. Philmore - Funkadelic - Sweeeet funky funk

2. Drac4 - A Japanese friend of mine adlibbing lyrics to a Jazz song we were working on. He's making woooshing noises and singing "Night city, Night city." Genius.

3. Marquis in Spades - Smashing Pumpkins Bsides. Love the bsides. SP YO!

4. Brand New Sunset - Hi-Standard. One of the first Japanese punk bands I heard, they are kind of the Green Day of Japan... but their songs are really well written. They sing in English, the lyrics on this are "The words that you said... they turned me into a man."

5. Today - Smashing Pumpkins

6. Can't Be Sure - The Sundays. The Sundays first album is soooo solid. Reminds me of reading Warhammer books in Zak's bedroom.

7. The Telephone Call - Kraftwerk

8. Turnover - Fugazi. Such an AWESOME song... makes Sunny Day Realestate sound like wannabes... but I guess that isn't so hard to do.

9. The Bend - The Scene. 1996, my voice sounds embaressing... but the instruments are 10 years ahead of their time.

10. Feeling So Strong - DMX KREW - Euro fake 80s retro house music, really cool band worth checking out. Now his cds only come out in Japan.

I so wish I had "Drac4" on my computer. The idea of someone ad libbing woosh noises over jazz is funny in the extreme.

I'm afraid I can't match your Smashing Pumpkins love for one reason: Billy Corgan's voice. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I will happily buy Smashing Pumpkins tribute albums because I love the songwriting.

Lastly, I've got about seventy Prey CDs in my house. Adrian gave me a box right before he threw out all the extras you guys had laying around. I've been depositing them in coffee shops all around Seattle. As far as I'm concerned, the legacy will live on.

That is awesome news! If you can hang on to a few till Christmas is it cool if I grab a few (or a lot) from you. I'd like to distribute some here.

I've always wanted to hear John Vanderslice but never got around to it. I'm sure it's brilliant. What would be a recommended album?

Smashing Pumpkins Rock. Billy Corgan's voice is cool cause at the time it sounded original and alien. It was so cool to see an alterno guy singing like a little girl.... I can understand not being into it though.

Refreshing take

Love the Refreshments... brings a memory:

I first saw the Refreshments opening for Dishwalla out here in Philly back in '96. Oh, and there was another opening band by the name of Tonic. I had never seen or heard of either of them before that. I was hooked on both just off the live sets they did. Actually Dishwalla was the least enjoyable part of the evening, by far. They didn't even sound good on that Blue Cars song.
